Goals Are Stupid

Hey there,

I’ve been wrestling with the idea of goals.

People always like to ask “What are your goals.”

Every time someone does… I struggle to answer.

I always have.

I thought there was something wrong with me.

But as I get older and hopefully wiser.

I realize that just because other people do something, doesn’t mean you have to.

Most people are following the pack.

They don’t ask “Why am I doing this.”

Steve Jobs was big on this.

They asked him “How did you learn to run a company?”

His response was basically…

I ask why.

Why are we doing this?

Why is this done that way?

Why are we spending money on this?

And people’s answers would be, “Idk that’s just how we do it.”

From there he used gut instinct to tweak the process.

See most people have no idea why they are even doing the things they are doing.

They never stop and think WHY.

WHY has to be at the center of everything we do?

Otherwise, you’re just a sheep.

Bahhhhhhh…

Let me do what everyone else does.

Ok.

Back to goals.

The reason I always struggle to answer the question “What are my goals?”

Is that I don’t fucking like goals.

“The reason that most of us are unhappy most of the time is that we set our goals not for the person we’re going to be when we reach them, but we set our goals for the person we are when we set them.

Jim Coudal

What I do like is having a vision.

I have a vision of wanting to…

  • Be a better marketer

  • Be in great shape

  • Be a great partner, father, husband, etc.

Whatever it is.

But I’m not setting a goal for those things.

Those things are never finished.

I like to focus on the process of learning, adapting, and growing.

I am just focused on getting better.

How do I know I am getting better?

You’ll never guess.

I just fucking feel it in my gut.

Don’t kid yourself.

You know if you’re doing better.

I don’t need to track it on a spreadsheet.

I don’t need a scale to tell me I’m in shape.

Looking in the fucking mirror.

More people need to look in the mirror.

You have all the answers you need.

That’s it for now.

Have a killer week.
